Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM)

The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) is an innovative approach to earning a secondary school diploma (OSSD) funded by the Ministry of Education as part of the provincial Student Success Strategy designed to “reach every student”.
The SHSM enables students to customize their Secondary School experience to suit their interests and talents while preparing them for a successful post-secondary transition into apprenticeship training, college, university, or direct entry into employment.
Limestone students will have the opportunity to qualify for an SHSM in one of the following sectors:  Arts & Culture, Construction, Energy, Environment, Forestry, Health & Wellness, Hospitality & Tourism, Justice, Community Safety and Emergency Services, Manufacturing, Sports and Transportation.

Who can participate in the Specialist High Skills Major?

Senior secondary students who have an interest in a particular field or a desire to develop specialized knowledge and skills while they earn the necessary credits needed to graduate. The SHSM student understands the benefit of gaining sector specific certifications, career related training and reach ahead activity that will help them make more informed decisions about their future.

Co-operative Education

Co-operative Education is a Ministry approved program that allows students to earn secondary school credits while completing a work placement. The program consists of a co-op course monitored by a co-operative education teacher, a related curriculum course in any subject and a work placement supervisor.

Students can apply two co-op credits towards their compulsory high school graduation requirements, with no limit on earning optional co-op credits. Co-op placements are arranged for students by their secondary school and must follow Ministry of Education policy and guidelines.

Who can participate in co-op education?

Co-programs are for secondary students who are planning for apprenticeship, college, university, or workplace.

Co-op students have the opportunity to:

  • Experience hands-on learning
  • Participate in health and safety training
  • See the relevance of their classroom learning
  • Earn credits through workplace experience
  • Develop the essential skills and habits required in the workplace
  • Gain valuable work experience that will help build a resume for post-secondary programs and future employment.

Where are the co-op programs offered and how do I Find out more:

  • All LDS schools offer co-op programs, and many of the Focus Programs offer co-op opportunities in sector related placements.

Goals of Cooperative Education

All students can benefit from participating in cooperative education. In their experiences in cooperative education, students will develop:

  • a reflective habit of mind to derive meaning from their experiences;
  • the ability to apply (e.g., transfer) their learning to influence decisions and actions in various aspects of their lives;
  • the skills, knowledge, and habits of mind required to become competent and confident education and career/life planners.
