Kingston Secondary School October Update

Extra-curricular Activities

Staff and students at K.S.S are grateful to be back to in-person learning and engaging in extra-curricular activities again. We are fortunate to have many exciting sports operating such as junior and senior football, cross country running, boys' volleyball, golf, girls' basketball and field hockey. Visit the KASSAA website for schedules, results and to look ahead to winter sports. http://www.kassaa.ca/

The clubs and activities operating are the following: Chess, Math, HOSA, Harmony, Anime/Board Games, Business Club, School Newspaper, Band, Jazz Band, Robotics, and run/walk club are all up and operating. Additional Information is available in the main office. We encourage students to get involved in an activity or club and contribute positively to our school community.

Our Student Association and Athletic Association are busy planning numerous activities to support building a positive school community.

Vaccinations and Extra-curriculars

On October 5, the Limestone District School Board announced new requirements around vaccination status for students who are participating in optional extra-curricular programming.  All sports, and some other clubs/groups that have been deemed “higher risk”, will require that all students are completely vaccinated (including the 14-day waiting period after the second dose) by Tuesday, November 19th.

The timelines they communicated were as follows:

  • The first dose of vaccination must be completed the week of October 4th.
  • The second dose of vaccination must be completed the week of November 1st.
  • All participants must be fully vaccinated (including the 14-day waiting period following dose 2) by November 19th.

As a school, we are being asked to verify the vaccination status of the students in these activities.  Our plan is to meet with students individually and simply check off whether they have had their vaccine.  We will collect no further information.

If a student has had;

  • Two doses of the vaccine, no further action is required.
  • One dose of the vaccine, they may continue to participate but will have to provide negative results from rapid antigen testing (available for purchase from a pharmacy) each Tuesday and Thursday until after their second dose.
  • No doses, they need to receive their first dose, and then will have to provide negative results from rapid antigen testing each Tuesday and Thursday until after their second dose.

If a student has a documented medical exemption or an approved accommodation under the Human Rights Code they will need to provide this documentation instead of their proof of their vaccination.  These individuals will be required to show negative results from a rapid antigen test twice weekly (on Tuesdays and Thursdays) to continue their participation.  Tests will not be provided but can be purchased from pharmacies.

The Limestone District School Board has made this decision to continue to provide extra-curricular activities in the safest way possible.  We thank you for your understanding.

Many thanks to our staff and community volunteers who devote many hours to make clubs, sports, and activities possible and so enjoyable for our students.

Unfortunately, spectators are not currently permitted to events. We are livestreaming events where possible. We will send links out to our twitter account @kss_ldsb the day of the games.

Gratitude for Kindness Initiative

A class of grade 9/10 students are organizing an initiative to recognize kind acts at K.S.S. Students and staff are encouraged to nominate people for acts of kindness during the month of October. Students who are nominated will be recognized for their positive contributions to the school community.

Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT)

The test will be completed on-line for all students in grade ten and students in grade 11 who did not write the test last year will write the last two weeks of October. Students and families will be notified directly. Additional information is on our website: https://kss.limestone.on.ca/ If your student would like additional opportunity to practice for the test.
