March Update from Kingston Secondary School

Highlights

The KSS Debating Club won the Ontario Ethics Bowl in a competition field of 78 teams and secured a place in the Canada High School Ethics Bowl in late April in Winnipeg. Students submitted two plays in the Kingston-St. Lawrence District National Theatre School Dramafest. Leaving with an award of distinction and awards of excellence. The play ‘Sorry’ will be advancing to The Eastern Regional NTS Dramafest. A number of students competed at the recent Skills Competition at St. Lawrence College and we will find out the results later in March. We had 57 students participate in the DECA Provincial Business Competition. We had over 20 medalists!  In the area of athletics KSS has experienced an impressive winter sports season: senior girls VB with a silver medal at KASSAA, Gold at EOSSAA and competed at OFSAA, Senior Boys Basketball team for competing at EOSSAA, Snowboarding team gold at KASSAA, gold at EOSSAA and silver at OFSAA, Curling team Gold at KASSAA and competed at EOSSAA, Boys Hockey team competing at EOSSAA, Senior Boys BB to EOSSAA, and Ski team gold at KASSAA and silver at EOSSAA and Swim team individual golds at EOSSAA and competed at OFSAA. Congratulations to all of our competitors in their various roles representing KSS so well across the province. We thank all of our volunteer coaches and club advisors for their enthusiasm and commitment. We look forward to an exciting spring season just around the corner!

Administration Transition

Throughout the month of March, we have had an administrative transition. We would like to wish Vice Principal Kate Brennan all the best on her maternity leave. She will be missed. We are also delighted to be welcoming Vice Principal Michelle Sousa to Vanier and Kingston Secondary School.

OSSLT

The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) is a provincially mandated test that is a graduation requirement. Students at Kingston Secondary School will be scheduled to write the OSSLT between March 27 and 31, 2023.  All grade 10 students who have not previously written, and those who were unsuccessful in their previous attempt, will be eligible to write the OSSLT.

Those writing for the first time will write with their English classes; students attempting for a second time or who were absent will be scheduled to write during the same timeframe.  Eligible students will receive a letter, closer to the test date, that indicates when they will write.

Learning Program Support (LPS) teachers will connect with students who have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) to discuss accommodations for the test.

Additional information about the test can be found on the EQAO website, here. Please speak to your student about preparation for the test.

DELF Exam for all Grade 12 students who have taken French

This is the opportunity for all French as a Second Language students – core, extended and immersion – to earn a diploma granted by the government of France that internationally recognizes the student’s level of competency in French.  Exams will be written at KSS during the end of April and beginning of May. Students should see Madame Graham-Burra for additional information.
